New York Stem Cell Foundation

The New York Stem Cell Foundation (www.nyscf.org) is seeking a unique research technician to support work on the characterization and maintenance of newly derived human embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cell lines in the NYSCF laboratory.  Qualified applicants will have experience in basic mammalian cell culture, flow cytometry and/or cell sorting using FACS AriaII, and a mechanical aptitude for operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment. Flow Cytometry Research Analyst / Scientist Position

The Tolerance Assay and Data Analysis Group (TADA) of the Immune Tolerance Network (ITN) has an open position for a flow cytometry research analyst/scientist at their Bethesda, MD office. The ITN is a National Institutes of Health-funded research network created to facilitate the advancement of immune tolerance-inducing initiatives in human clinical practice. With over $30 million dollars in funding per year, the ITN is responsible for the selection, design and key aspects of the implementation of mechanistic, laboratory-based studies and clinical trials examining many of the most advanced experimental drugs and biologics in development today.

 

The ITN has approximately 80 full-time members divided into the functional areas needed to design and carry out integrated mechanistic and clinical trials in several distinct disease areas including multiple auto immune diseases such as type I diabetes, lupus, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and including the induction of tolerance to transplants. The ITN currently has 30+ clinical trials in progress, many of which measure the dynamics of complex lymphocyte subpopulations using multi-parameter flow analysis.

 

The successful candidate will perform complex flow cytometry data analyses and must have extensive practical knowledge of flow cytometry including analysis of FCS files using multiple software applications. These include, but are not limited to FlowJo, CXP, ModFit , WinList and FCS Express. The candidate will manage schedules and timelines of sample analysis, generate and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and oversee core laboratories' performance by means of quality assurance. The incumbent will be responsible for generating and implementing a quality assurance plan for flow cytometry assays performed in the core laboratories to ensure that all assays are reproducible and high quality.  The successful applicant will also be responsible for archiving and managing scientific data, meeting minutes and generating quality control reports.

 

M.S. in Biotechnology or a related field and a minimum of three years of relevant experience, or B.S with five years experience is required. A strong background in immunology is preferred. The candidate must express strong interests in innovative research tools for new approaches for high throughput flow data analysis and visualization that can be implemented in flow cytometric data analysis as well as for quality assurance processes. These might include:

 

*        Batch processing of a large amount of flow cytometry data

*        Data quality assessments

*        Identification of artifacts in sample preparation/handling & recommendation(s) for correction

*        Software tools for defining cell populations and automated gating

*        High throughput data visualization

We require an experienced flow cytometrist to work in a major research core facility located in the Toronto Medical Discovery Tower (TMDT) and serving approximately 50 basic and clinical science research labs from the downtown Toronto Biomedical Research community.

The TMDT houses over 100 basic and translational biomedical research laboratories affiliated with the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and the University Health Network (UHN). It is located within the MaRS Discovery District (www.marsdd.com), a convergence innovation centre located in Toronto’s renowned “Discovery District” – two square kilometers in the heart of downtown that have been designated as the city’s centre of innovation. Adjacent to the TMDT academic research labs the MaRS  “Incubator” is currently home to 22 companies, representing a diversity of industries including information technology, life sciences, biotechnology and medical devices.

 Reporting to a Senior Scientist in the SickKids Research Institute, you will help maintain and operate several analytical flow cytometers and cell sorters, including BD LSRIIs and BD FACSAriaIIs in a level II safety environment. You will also help train graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and research technologists to operate the analytical instruments and to analyze their data off-line using FlowJo and other custom software packages.

You will be responsible for daily instrument calibration, fluidics and electronics checks and cross-beam fluorescence compensation. After the instruments have been appropriately aligned, calibrated and compensated, you will perform 2-way or 4-way high-speed sorting of rare cell populations for clients.

Additional responsibilities include: fostering relationships with clients; instrument troubleshooting; helping maintain safe practices within the facility; assessing new and alternative cytometry techniques; and ensuring data is sufficiently backed up.

 

Qualifications

Candidates must have at minimum a MSc, or a BSc with at least 3 years’ experience with a variety of flow cytometry applications, preferably on newer digital analytical flow cytometers and cell sorters, as well as flow cytometric software, such as CellQuest, Diva and FlowJo.

Under the supervision of the Group Leader, the Fluorescence Core Technical Officer will be responsible for overseeing the daily operation of the Fluorescence Core, including such equipment as flow cytometers and cell sorters, confocal and fluorescence microscopes, calcium imagers and microarray readers. The Technical Officer will interact with investigators to implement experiments in a multidiscipline environment with both discovery and applied research interests, as well as with external clients in support of contract research services. POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE

 

A postdoctoral position is currently available in the Laboratory of B cell Immunoregulation, at the Duke Human Vaccine Institute (DHVI) to work on the role of B cells in the immune response to HIV.  The project will specifically involve characterizing B cell immune modulation mechanisms in a variety of knock-in mouse models we have recently engineered to express light and/or heavy chains from the broadly neutralizing HIV antibody 2F5, and using these models to test if/what immunization regimens can elicit the production of broadly neutralizing antibodies.  Qualified candidates should have experience in molecular and cellular immunology techniques and extensive experience using flow cytometry.  Preference will be given to candidates with experience in characterizing mouse knockout/knockin models and performing mouse breedings and immunizations.  A solid background in B cell immunology is also a plus.

Research efforts at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital are directed at understanding the molecular, genetic and chemical bases of catastrophic diseases in children. The Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting Shared Resource supports investigators with access to state-of-the-art equipment and expertise in all aspects of flow cytometry and cell sorting for the analysis and separation of cell populations stained with fluorescent compounds.  

The Flow Cytometry Specialist in the Genetics and Tumor Cell Biology Department as part of the Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting Shared Resource assists the principal investigator with the collection and analysis of data for specified research projects, performs flow cytometry experiments with minimal supervision, learns and develops new procedures, and manages specific, but limited, laboratory functions and trains laboratory personnel.

Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field and eight years (post-degree) of work experience in contemporary flow cytometry is required

OR

  • A Master's degree in an appropriate scientific field and seven years (post-degree) of work experience in contemporary flow cytometry is required

OR

  • A PhD in an appropriate scientific field and four years (post-degree) of work experience including post-doctoral and/or technical staff experience in contemporary flow cytometry is required


Preferred skills:

  • Experience in the operation of BD Biosciences or Cytomation cell sorters and experience in the operation of BD Biosciences analyzers preferred.

  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, Powerpoint and data analysis experience using both PC and Macintosh based flow cytometer computer software preferred.

Responsibilities –Scientist

As Scientist you will be a member of the biology R&D team, focused upon developing new reagents and technology platforms and improving existing platforms.  The successful candidate will participate in efforts to develop new assays in cytometry and functional cell biology. Applicants are expected to have significant experience in fluorescent assay development, cytometry data analysis and associated data management, and familiarity with a broad range of automated microscopy instrumentation. The candidate will develop reagents and kits utilized for wide-field fluorescence microscopy, confocal microscopy, flow cytometry and high-content cell analysis that can potentially be used as readouts for cellular perturbation by compounds, proteins, or RNAi.  Assay kits developed will be suitable for primary cells, as well as established cell lines, with the overall goal of providing richer readouts of biological activity than traditional assays performed for compound screening. The successful candidate will be part of a team of biologists, creating kits relevant to pathway, mechanism, and predictive knowledge for target discovery and validation.

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Develop, optimize, and implement cellular imaging assays.
  • Develop and optimize new reagents and kits relating to cytometry, as well as, functional biology and cellular biochemistry.
  • Serve as a member of small teams, that may be cross-functional, to achieve strategic goals within defined target time frames.
  • Solve complex research, development and sustaining challenges.
  • Perform data analysis; write reports and present results and project assessments to Senior Management.
  • Understand and support stage-gate New Product Introduction process with own projects and others within strong team environment in R&D.
  • Maintain high level of professional expertise through familiarity with current scientific literature, competitor products and attendance of scientific seminars and meetings

Requirements.

Education and Experience:

  • MS in Cell Biology or related field, with minimum of one year experience in cytometry for drug screening or basic research.
  • Prior hands-on experience with cell-based assays and a range of related techniques such as immunocytochemistry, flow cytometry, and real-time PCR is essential.
  • Proficiency in mammalian cell culture, transfection methodologies, and cell line characterization in an industrial setting.
  • Good working knowledge of cell and molecular biology and experience in at least two of the following areas RNA interference, cell based assay design and validation and high-content/high-throughput image analysis.
  • Familiarity with functional biology and cellular biochemistry, target identification and validation, laboratory automation, and data analysis is highly desirable.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills along with well-developed oral and written communication capabilities.
  • A sound understanding of bioanalytical assay development.
  • A desire to be a part of highly motivated teams in a fast paced, dynamic environment.

Flow Cytometry Manager – Temple University

We have an immediate opening for a scientist to manage the Flow Cytometry Facility of Temple University. This Facility is a part of a rapidly expanding research community.  Current instrumentation includes Becton-Dickinson FACS Calibur, FACS Aria, LSRII, and Influx instruments. Duties include minor instrument maintenance, quality control, training, cell sorting, advanced multiparamater analysis, and consultation to assist in the optimal design and analysis of data. Participation in planning for additional expansion of the Facility is also expected.
