Flow Cytometry Operator/Manager

The newly created CCTI, is looking for a highly energetic self motivated individual to join our Flow Cytometry Core on or before September 2010.  Expected  instrumentation will include BD FACS Aria II cell sorter; BD LSR II and BD FACSCanto and Caliber analysers.

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for independent operation and scheduled maintenance of BD FACSAria II Cell Sorters from Becton Dickinson.  He/she will also train users to operate Analyzers, evaluate and troubleshoot problems, assist in experimental design/protocol development, data acquisition and analysis/presentation.

 

Bachelor's degree in science required, M.S. or Ph.D. preferred. Must have relevant flow cytometry experience (a minimum of two years for M.S. and Ph.D.; three years for B.S.). Competency with cell sorting is highly desirable as well as general lab experience working with cell cultures, cells ex vivo. Experience with confocal/2-photon fluorescent microscopy is a plus. Computer competency in both PC and MAC systems and relevant computer programs is a must. POSITION SUMMARY

The Medical Technologist performs flow cytometry and hematology functions. This position prepares specimens using a variety of procedures for antibody staining, acquisition, and analysis on a multi-color flow cytometer. The position also performs hematology functions including preparing and staining peripheral blood smears and bone marrow aspirates for differential counts as well as CBCs on peripheral blood specimens. This position is full time Monday thru Friday 12:30 PM - 9:00 PM and requires being on call every 3rd weekend.

 

§  Processes specimens for Flow Cytometry including bone marrow aspirates, peripheral

      blood, tissues, FNA’s and body fluids.

§  Stains processed specimens using monoclonal antibodies.

§  Acquires stained specimen data on the FACScaliburs flow cytometer.

§  Maintains working knowledge of equipment used in the Flow Cytometry lab.

§  Prepares reagents for use in the Flow laboratory.

§  Prepares and performs differential counts on bone marrow aspirate smears.

§  Performs routine CBC on peripheral blood specimens for inclusion with bone marrow

      morphology reports.

§  Performs accurate accessioning of patient specimens.

EDUCATION

We require an experienced flow cytometrist to work in a major research core facility located in the Toronto Medical Discovery Tower (TMDT) and serving approximately 50 basic and clinical science research labs from the downtown Toronto Biomedical Research community.

 

The TMDT houses over 100 basic and translational biomedical research laboratories affiliated with the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and the University Health Network (UHN). It is located within the MaRS Discovery District (www.marsdd.com), a convergence innovation centre located in Toronto’s renowned “Discovery District” – two square kilometers in the heart of downtown that have been designated as the city’s centre of innovation. Adjacent to the TMDT academic research labs the MaRS  “Incubator” is currently home to 22 companies, representing a diversity of industries including information technology, life sciences, biotechnology and medical devices.

 

Reporting to a Senior Scientist in the SickKids Research Institute, you will help maintain and operate several analytical flow cytometers and cell sorters, including BD LSRIIs and BD FACSAriaIIs in a level II safety environment. You will also help train graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and research technologists to operate the analytical instruments and to analyze their data off-line using FlowJo and other custom software packages.

You will be responsible for daily instrument calibration, fluidics and electronics checks and cross-beam fluorescence compensation. After the instruments have been appropriately aligned, calibrated and compensated, you will perform 2-way or 4-way high-speed sorting of rare cell populations for clients.

 

Additional responsibilities include: fostering relationships with clients; instrument troubleshooting; helping maintain safe practices within the facility; assessing new and alternative cytometry techniques; and ensuring data is sufficiently backed up.

 

Qualifications

Flow Cytometry Scientist

 

The Inflammation Disease Therapy Area at Hoffmann-La Roche, in Nutley, NJ, is recruiting a highly motivated scientist with demonstrated success in the field of flow cytometry to assist in running flow cytometry assays, including novel assay development.  The candidate will have full access to a flow cytometry lab consisting of BD LSRII custom flow cytometers, a BD FACS Aria cell sorter, FACS Caliber flow cytometers, Amnis Image Stream flow cytometer, etc.  This position will initially be for one year with continuation for additional years based upon successful job performance.

 

Primary responsibilities:

1)      Run flow cytometry assays consisting of 5+ color surface staining, intracellular staining, phospho-flow, internalization, etc. 

2)      Assist with cell separations and preparation of samples for experiments as part of a team of scientists.

3)      Devise and implement novel applications of flow cytometry, including analysis of data.

4)      Deliver clear and complete analysis of data during group meetings.

5)      Experience with other technologies such as Image Stream, MSD, ELISA, MACS, Stem Cell Technologies separations, etc is helpful.

Flow Cytometry Research Analyst / Scientist Position

The Tolerance Assay and Data Analysis Group (TADA) of the Immune Tolerance Network (ITN) has an open position for a flow cytometry research analyst/scientist at their Bethesda, MD office. The ITN is a National Institutes of Health-funded research network created to facilitate the advancement of immune tolerance-inducing initiatives in human clinical practice. With over $30 million dollars in funding per year, the ITN is responsible for the selection, design and key aspects of the implementation of mechanistic, laboratory-based studies and clinical trials examining many of the most advanced experimental drugs and biologics in development today.

 

The ITN has approximately 80 full-time members divided into the functional areas needed to design and carry out integrated mechanistic and clinical trials in several distinct disease areas including multiple auto immune diseases such as type I diabetes, lupus, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and including the induction of tolerance to transplants. The ITN currently has 30+ clinical trials in progress, many of which measure the dynamics of complex lymphocyte subpopulations using multi-parameter flow analysis.

 

The successful candidate will perform complex flow cytometry data analyses and must have extensive practical knowledge of flow cytometry including analysis of FCS files using multiple software applications. These include, but are not limited to FlowJo, CXP, ModFit , WinList and FCS Express. The candidate will manage schedules and timelines of sample analysis, generate and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and oversee core laboratories' performance by means of quality assurance. The incumbent will be responsible for generating and implementing a quality assurance plan for flow cytometry assays performed in the core laboratories to ensure that all assays are reproducible and high quality.  The successful applicant will also be responsible for archiving and managing scientific data, meeting minutes and generating quality control reports.

The TMDT houses over 100 basic and translational biomedical research laboratories affiliated with the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and the University Health Network (UHN). It is located within the MaRS Discovery District (www.marsdd.com), a convergence innovation centre located in Toronto’s renowned “Discovery District” – two square kilometers in the heart of downtown that have been designated as the city’s centre of innovation. Adjacent to the TMDT academic research labs the MaRS  “Incubator” is currently home to 22 companies, representing a diversity of industries including information technology, life sciences, biotechnology and medical devices.

 Reporting to a Senior Scientist in the SickKids Research Institute, you will help maintain and operate several analytical flow cytometers and cell sorters, including BD LSRIIs and BD FACSAriaIIs in a level II safety environment. You will also help train graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and research technologists to operate the analytical instruments and to analyze their data off-line using FlowJo and other custom software packages.

You will be responsible for daily instrument calibration, fluidics and electronics checks and cross-beam fluorescence compensation. After the instruments have been appropriately aligned, calibrated and compensated, you will perform 2-way or 4-way high-speed sorting of rare cell populations for clients.

POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE

 

A postdoctoral position is currently available in the Laboratory of B cell Immunoregulation, at the Duke Human Vaccine Institute (DHVI) to work on the role of B cells in the immune response to HIV.  The project will specifically involve characterizing B cell immune modulation mechanisms in a variety of knock-in mouse models we have recently engineered to express light and/or heavy chains from the broadly neutralizing HIV antibody 2F5, and using these models to test if/what immunization regimens can elicit the production of broadly neutralizing antibodies.  Qualified candidates should have experience in molecular and cellular immunology techniques and extensive experience using flow cytometry.  Preference will be given to candidates with experience in characterizing mouse knockout/knockin models and performing mouse breedings and immunizations.  A solid background in B cell immunology is also a plus.

Research Support Specialist

Flow Cytometry Resource Center

The Rockefeller University (http://www.rockefeller.edu/about.php), a leading biomedical Research Institute, is looking for a highly energetic self motivated individual to join our state-of-art Flow Cytometry Resource Center (FCRC, http://www.rockefeller.edu/fcrc/ ) as a Research Support Specialist.  FCRC serves over 250 investigators from 40 different laboratories. Current instrumentation includes BD FACSAriaII cell sorters; ImageStream100 Imaging Flow Cytometer (to be upgraded soon for ImageStreamX); BD LSRII and BD FACSCalibur Analyzers (for details see http://www.rockefeller.edu/fcrc/instruments.php).

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for independent operation and scheduled maintenance of BD FACSAriaII Cell Sorters from Becton Dickinson, as well as Image Stream from Amnis.  He/she will also train users to operate Analyzers, evaluate and troubleshoot problems, assist in experimental design/protocol development, data acquisition and analysis/presentation.

 

Bachelor's degree in science required, M.S. or Ph.D. preferred. Must have relevant flow cytometry experience (a minimum of two years for M.S. and Ph.D.; five years for B.S.). Competency with cell sorting is highly desirable as well as general lab experience working with cell cultures and cell ex vivo. ImageStream training to be provided; prior familiarity/competency a plus. Computer competency in both PC and MAC systems and relevant computer programs is a must. Must have ability to work independently, meet responsibilities without continuous supervision, good verbal communication skills, and ability to interact successfully with a broad range of individuals within and outside the University, strong attention to detail. Willingness to work flexible/staggered shifts necessary.

SCOPE AND

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Works closely with existing and prospective customers to maximize the effective utilization of existing Beckman Coulter flow cytometry products, provide advanced high-value solutions, and promote customer satisfaction. Supports sales, marketing, service, and product development teams by identifying, documenting, and promoting marketable solutions.

 

The incumbent is responsible for driving the plan designed to achieve established consumable and hardware goals adhering to financial guidelines.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

 

 

·         Lead efforts to uncover and develop innovative solutions to address customer needs; determine and influence decision criteria, protocol establishment, and technical conversion.

 

·         Work with selected customers to develop advanced flow cytometry solutions to meet their needs.  

 

·         Whenever possible, assist the customer in documenting novel flow cytometry solutions in the form of peer review journal articles, meeting presentations, “white papers”, or application notes.

 

·         Inform the market about Beckman Coulter’s advanced flow cytometry capabilities via the BCI website, technical bulletins, workshops, meeting presentations, and VIP product demonstrations.

 

·         Provide technical training to the flow cytometry sales force to enhance their ability to communicate with prospective customers about our advanced technologies and solutions.

 

·         Work in conjunction with the flow cytometry applications specialists in implementing and supporting advanced solutions.

 

·         Provide feedback to the product development team to help guide reagent, hardware, and software innovation and improvement.

 

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

 

 Industry lab experience with Flow Cytometry instrumentation and protocols

 

EDUCATION:

PhD preferred in Cell Biology, Immunology. Molecular Biology or related fields, but exceptional BS/MS candidates are also encouraged to apply.
